One thing I considered this year was to create a different raised garden bed-design for planting my flowers and vegetables. This one is much deeper to provide more depth in growing the bounty that I hope to consume. In preparing to receive the soil for planting I am using huge cardboard box structures that have been dismantled and placed on the floor of the garden bed to prohibit weed growth. This cardboard is extremely thick as well.
Eager to plant something beneficial in the ground, I began with amending the soil using Peat moss, Top and Garden soils, Perlite, Cow Manure, and Fertilizer for growing abundant flowers and vegetables. What do you use and how do you think these variations will impact the soil? I have been gardening for a while and have been blessed with successful yields. Do you believe having your own garden will encourage you to plant and eat healthier vegetables and to maybe indulge in foods you probably would not consume? Let us think about cutting out some of those carbohydrates, processed foods and possibly eating more green leafy vegetables!
What are you planting this season? I normally use potted plants to begin the planting process, and rarely use seeds, however this year I have decided to use Heirloom Seeds instead of GMO. GMO products are identified as “any plant, animal or microbe whose DNA has been altered through genetic engineering techniques” (AI Overview). Heirloom seeds are plant seeds that have been preserved and passed down through generations typically for the past 50 years.
My garden has usually been planted near the end of March, however, over a year ago, I planted it during that time and the garden looked great, plants were thriving and were beautiful when we had a freeze and everything died. This loss was expensive and devastating! When do you plant your garden? I have decided not to plant my garden before April 20th each year, to allow the ground to warm up, Since I am using seeds, I did not put them into the small pots to germinate until April 18, Ready to see the plants come up out of the ground, on April 30th, I chose to put potted plants into huge pots. What did I plant? I am glad you asked, I planted German Johnson tomatoes, pickling cucumbers, yellow squash, white potatoes and green cabbage. Please follow the progress of this planting season on Facebook and on my Blog. Hope to see you there!
