Value of a Promise

What does a promise mean to you? How does it make you feel when individuals make them and never even consider fulfilling the promise or thinking about the impact it may have made on the life of others? In days of old during my parents’ generation, promises influenced how you were viewed in many ways. One main path was determined if you could be trusted. This was crucial, and many chose not to even make a promise if they believed that they could not fulfill it. These individuals understood how valuable a promise was and how it measured the kind of person you were. Your character was placed on display.
Your Word Carries Weight
Dad would say to us that a person’s promise to do a thing was his bond because it could stand in the place of money. Small farmers did not have the money to make purchases for their crops until the end of the season, so they got items they needed on credit without money. They made a promise or gave the merchant their word that he would receive pay when the crops were sold. Their promise was like money in the bank, and the merchant knew all was good and they would be cared for as discussed by the two of them.
Promises of God are Mighty-Wait for It!
Similarly, God’s Word is true to us because he has made numerous promises for us to receive amazing things if we obey and follow him. We are a microwaveable type of people and so much want things to happen right now, but we are learning each day that sometimes the promises of God require us to wait. He assures us in Isaiah 55:8-9 which says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” God is true to his promises.
