Building Lasting Relationships Through Group Coaching

What kinds of things do you do to connect with others and build relationships? Well, we have a group of wonderful men and women that meet each week for Group Life Coaching and yes individual coaching is offered upon appointments. We realize that life is short and encourage each one of our clients to (write about) share their experiences, small or great from the last time we met, which usually includes a weekend and is to be valued, even if it is only much needed rest.

Our first off-campus group event was on Tuesday morning at the home of one of our members, Ms. Janet, who had us over for lunch. Some of our friends, however, were unable to attend due to previous engagements.  Mr. Tim, who had moved to the Garner area but now attends a Senior Center there offered an additional twist for us. We had the best chauffeur transporting us that anyone could ask for in Mr. Roger!  He was so patient as he opened and closed the doors for each of us as we entered his vehicle.  He even drove me up to the entry door of Dollar Tree upon entering and exiting and we were on our way. Minutes later we arrived at our destination, Ms. Janet met us at the door and shared that she had a wonderful surprise for us inside. Mr. Tim had joined us all the way from Garner, we were so excited to see him, engaging in lots of hugs! He had had a stroke over a year earlier and pledged that he would regain his independence to drive again, and he had done just that, “Way to go Mr. Tim!”

Ms. Janet is such a talented lady! We were blessed to have a grand tour of her beautiful home, projects, crafts, and enjoy a delicious lunch. She has had Muscular sclerosis (MS) and spent many years in a wheelchair which gave her a greater drive to not allow the disease to win over her life.  These projects included themed pictures displayed throughout her home. Inclusive of card making, quilting, crocheting, beading on linen fabric, framed pictures of various mediums and even tole painting. Her most recent challenge is to make 3 identical Afghans with different colors. She has joined an Afghan Kit Club and receives instructions each week on how to continue the process. Ms. Janet jokingly tells us that she has to live to be 164 years old to finish all of her projects that she is working on and before she goes to heaven to meet her husband.

What can we learn from Ms. Janet about procrastination? How does she choose a craft or an idea and accomplish it? What lessons or wisdom can we learn from her bump in the road with her disease? Do you know anyone that has had similar struggles to this, but it ignited their journey to move forward and not remain stuck? How can projects and crafts help individuals build relationships with others, increase stamina to get on the move?

Develop an opportunity to explore responses of individual experiences to the questions above and choose to create a plan to engage and help others defeat isolation and or choose specific individuals to make connections to accomplish your mental and physical effort.
